Mr. Shanks united with the Baptist Church in his early manhood, and he was a mason of the Royal Arch Degree. He was a man of rare gifts, possessed of a remarkable memory and a rare taste in literature. His favorite pastime was the reading of the masters of fiction and poetry and reciting from memory their golden passages. he was of a reticent nature and even his nearest friends knew little of his inner self. During his sickness he said to a friend, "I have no doubt, no fear. I am ready to go to rest." And bowed under his loved son's tragic death he said, "My times are in my master's hand; I accept his will." The family extend their thanks to the friends who have been so kind during the illness of their father. -- kbz
